EDB file is main constituent of the Exchange information store. It holds email accounts of IMAP1 or POP3 clients on Exchange Server based domain. EDB file is also known as primary database file and extremely crucial for smooth email communication on Exchange Server based network. But email activity on the MS Exchange network may get disrupted due to EDB corruption. There are multiple reasons of Exchange database corruption such as virus infection, server shutdown, MS Windows crash and many more. Corrupt or damaged EDB files various error messages. One typical error of the EDB file is:
Exchange error code 1018 indicates page inconsistency in an Exchange Mailbox Store. EDB page mismatch error is often resulted due to system hardware failure or malfunctioning. Other possible reasons of EDB page mismatch error are accidental Exchange Server shutdown and virus attacks.
Page mismatch errors of Exchange Server can be fixed by replacing damaged hardware components and restarting Exchange Server. You can also use Eseutil and Isinteg command tools of MS Exchange Server to fix the page inconsistency issue. Use Eseutil/P command followed by Eseutil/d command on the corrupt mailbox store:
Eseutil/P command will try to recover Exchange mailbox store by omitting bad or invalid pages. It is also known as Exchange Server hard recovery option and should be used in critical EDB corruption. Eseutil/D defragments or trims un-mounted Exchange database. It should be used to delete empty pages and invalid indexes of the Exchange mailbox store.
After successful execution of the Eseutil/P and Eseutil/D commands, you must run Isinteg or Exchange integrity Checker on Exchange Server that has reported error code 1018. The Isinteg command line is:
You must run the Isinteg command repeatedly till Exchange Server shows errors. You can mount the recovered Exchange mailbox store back on the Exchange Server using Exchange management console.
